A home zone protects local access when a school manages crowding
A state school with an enrolment scheme defines a geographic home zone. A domestic student genuinely living inside it is entitled to enrol, subject to providing the evidence required by the scheme.
Not every school has a home zone. State-integrated schools and special programmes can also follow different enrolment arrangements, so start with the actual school rather than a general map assumption.
Out-of-zone is an application, not an entitlement
A board decides how many places are likely to remain after in-zone demand. Applications then follow the statutory priorities, with a ballot inside an oversubscribed priority group.
Distance from the gate does not override the line. A house 300 metres away can be out of zone while a more distant street is included.
Zones can change, but enrolled students have protection
The Ministry consults when creating or amending schemes. Once a child is enrolled, they are generally entitled to remain if the boundary changes or the family later moves out.
That does not make today’s boundary a promise for an unenrolled sibling. Families planning years ahead should monitor consultations and confirm each child’s position with the school.
