Understand household electricity costs in New Zealand
These calculators turn appliance use, electricity rates and billing details into practical estimates. They are designed for comparing scenarios—not predicting an exact retailer bill—because tariffs, daily charges, discounts and real appliance behaviour vary between households.
From watts and kWh to an estimated cost
Appliance running cost depends on energy used, not wattage alone. A simple device may use its rated power continuously, while heat pumps, fridges, dryers and dehumidifiers cycle or change output. Use measured kWh, an energy label or realistic operating assumptions whenever they are available.
For a useful estimate, enter the variable electricity rate from your own plan and keep cents per kWh separate from dollars per kWh. A complete power bill can also include a daily fixed charge, multiple time-of-use rates, credits, discounts and taxes. The electricity bill calculator can model more of those components than a single-appliance calculator.
Compare changes using the same assumptions
When comparing two appliances or habits, keep the electricity rate and time period consistent. Change one meaningful input—such as hours used, loads per week or annual kWh—so the reason for the difference remains clear. Solar payback needs additional assumptions for installation cost, generation, self-use and exported electricity.
Results are planning estimates. Weather, thermostat settings, room size, maintenance, household behaviour and future electricity prices can materially change actual use. Check the calculation method and limitations on each tool before using an annual figure in a household budget.
