02Good to know
Step 1: make contact before every document is ready
Work and Income says it may grant assistance from the date you first make contact if you complete the application within 20 working days. Do not wait for a perfect folder of evidence before starting contact. Record the contact date and any deadline or reference number you receive.
If you miss the requested timeframe, ask what happens next rather than assuming the original date is protected. The agency decides the commencement date under the rules and the facts of the application.

Step 2: choose the correct form or online route
If you receive no Work and Income payment, or only childcare help, apply through MyMSD or complete the Extra Help application. If you already receive a benefit, Disability Allowance or another payment, use the Accommodation Supplement application for existing clients. Students apply through StudyLink.
The form asks about household, relationship, housing arrangement, income and assets because all can change the result. Use your legal and current details. A partner is not optional information simply because only one person pays the rent from their bank account.

Step 3: gather proof of costs, income and assets
For rent or board, prepare a tenancy agreement, rent statement, landlord or boarding confirmation, or other evidence showing what you must pay. Homeowners may need mortgage and accepted ownership-cost evidence. Work and Income can tell you which documents it will accept for your arrangement.
You may also need bank statements, wage or income evidence, partner information and details of accessible savings or investments. Do not include a guessed area or hide payments from boarders or renters. The address and accommodation income affect the calculation.

Step 4: sense-check the amount before submission
Suppose a couple with children receives Jobseeker Support, pays $500.00 rent in Area 2 and has $2,000.00 cash assets. The $205 rent threshold leaves $295.00, and 70% produces an estimate of $207 a week after rounding.
That figure is below the $220 Area 2 maximum. Running this check does not prove eligibility, but it helps you notice if a household category, cost frequency or area has been entered incorrectly before you rely on an expected amount.

Step 5: submit, respond and check the decision
Follow the current form instructions: documents may be uploaded through MyMSD after contact, delivered to a service centre or posted to the appropriate office. New clients may need to verify identity at a service centre. Work and Income may arrange a phone or face-to-face appointment when more information is needed.
Read the decision letter and check the approved cost, area, household and start date. If circumstances change—such as rent, address, partner, income, assets or payments from an occupant—tell Work and Income. Accommodation Supplement circumstances are reviewed at least annually and payments can stop when required review information is not returned.
