Travel Insurance Cover NZ: Limits and Exclusions
Learn what NZ travel insurance may cover for medical emergencies, cancellations, luggage, delays and liability, plus the limits and exclusions to check.
General information only, not personal insurance advice or a statement that a claim will be paid. Product terms, premiums and eligibility can change; use the current policy wording and a written insurer decision. Key points
What may be covered—and what can block a claim
International policies commonly combine selected medical, cancellation, luggage, delay and liability benefits.
A listed benefit only applies when the event meets its definition and no exclusion removes cover.
Overall limits can contain smaller per-person, per-item, condition or event sub-limits.
Medical-only, comprehensive, domestic and annual policies solve different problems and should not be compared by name alone.

Common benefits and their important checks
This is a reading guide, not a promise that every policy includes each benefit.
| Check | May respond to | Check carefully |
|---|---|---|
| Medical | Eligible unexpected illness or injury overseas | Existing conditions, evacuation and assistance approval |
| Cancellation | Specified unforeseen events affecting the trip | Covered reasons, start date and prepaid-cost limit |
| Luggage | Eligible loss, theft or damage | Per-item caps, depreciation and unattended property |
| Delay | Specified additional costs after a qualifying delay | Waiting period, evidence and maximum payment |
| Rental vehicle excess | An eligible excess charged after vehicle damage | It is not full vehicle-damage or liability insurance |
| Personal liability | Eligible accidental damage or injury to another person | Motor vehicles, deliberate acts and accommodation can be excluded |
Medical cover is usually the central international benefit
Overseas medical benefits may cover eligible emergency treatment, hospital care and evacuation. The assistance provider may need to approve treatment or coordinate a major response.
Check the limit, exclusions and contact process before travelling. SafeTravel notes that the New Zealand Government will not pay a traveller’s overseas medical costs.
Cancellation cover starts with a covered reason
Cancellation insurance does not mean a traveller can cancel for any reason. The event must fit a covered cause and comply with timing, evidence and known-event rules.
A family of four taking a 21-day trip to Asia produces a KiwiTools comprehensive estimate of $352.06, with a broad $281 to $441 range. If the family has $8,000 of non-refundable bookings, that $8,000—not the $352.06 premium—is the cancellation limit to compare, subject to covered reasons and policy terms.

Luggage limits contain smaller limits
The total luggage benefit can be much larger than the maximum for one phone, camera, piece of jewellery or other valuable. Depreciation or proof-of-ownership rules may also affect payment.
Check unattended-property, checked-baggage and reporting requirements. Keep receipts or other evidence for items whose loss would create a substantial claim.
Delays, liability and rental vehicles are separate benefits
Travel-delay cover may reimburse specified additional costs only after a waiting period. Personal liability can exclude motor vehicles, deliberate acts and some accommodation damage.
Rental-vehicle excess cover is not the same as full motor insurance. Confirm vehicle eligibility and buy the liability or damage protection required for the rental.
Policy exclusions decide the boundary
Known events, excluded destinations, undeclared medical conditions, intoxication, unlawful conduct and unapproved activities are common areas to investigate. Definitions differ by policy.
Use the travel insurance cost calculator to set a premium budget, then search each full policy for the particular medical, cancellation, luggage or activity risk that matters. Ask the insurer for written clarification when the answer could affect whether you travel or buy an add-on.
Frequently asked questions
Does travel insurance cover all medical costs overseas?
No. Treatment must be eligible under the policy, and exclusions, medical-condition rules, limits and assistance requirements can apply.
Does travel insurance cover cancelled flights?
It may cover specified additional losses when the cause is insured, but airline obligations, commercial cancellations and policy exclusions must be checked.
Does travel insurance cover a lost phone?
It may, subject to per-item limits, depreciation, unattended-property exclusions and evidence or reporting requirements.
Does comprehensive mean everything is covered?
No. Comprehensive is a product label, not unlimited protection. Read the benefits, limits and exclusions in the current wording.
