The campground is located off the Challenge Mountain Bike Track (at the Wairoa Loop Track end). It is an easy one to two hour walk from Wairoa Dam car park.
This grass-surface campground includes a basic shelter with a roof and sides, a dirt floor, and wooden bunks. You may stay in the shelter or tents only. There is no vehicle access. A long-drop toilet is available on site, but there is no water supply. Bookings are essential and can be made up to six months in advance. Please keep your campsite clean and tidy during your stay and when you leave. There are no bins or rubbish facilities, so all rubbish and recycling must be taken out with you. Dogs, pets, and other animals are not permitted at any time. Fires are strictly prohibited. Getting there: From the information board, walk up the right-hand side of the Wairoa Loop Track . Continue until the track meets Repeater Road, then turn right and follow it for 200 m east. Turn left onto Challenge Track, and the campsite is 100 m up on the left. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
