Located close to Kerikeri township, this track follows the Wairoa Stream and includes the impressive Te Wairere waterfall. It can be walked as a return route or linked with other township tracks for a longer outing. Several access and exit points also allow you to loop back along streets if you prefer not to return the same way. The walk passes through stands of mature native bush, connected by more recent plantings that create a habitat corridor along the stream. Information boards share details about the area’s plants and history, while benches at scenic spots provide great places to take a break. The track is for walking only; it is not suitable for bikes or horses. Dogs are allowed on most of the route, except for one section that passes through a private easement. Expect a generally good surface, with some sections of tree roots and stony ground that can be slippery in wet weather. There are steps in several places, so the track is not wheelchair or buggy friendly. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and the track should be avoided during heavy rain. There are no facilities on the track itself. The Friends of Wairoa Stream have constructed this track along the Wairoa Stream in Kerikeri over the last 10 years. For donations to support maintenance and care of the track, see the Vision Kerikeri website: visionkerikeri.org.nz .
