Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Larrys Creek Track is an easy walking trail that passes through Victoria Forest Park in the West Coast region of New Zealand. The track follows the meandering Awarau or Larry River and leads to the Caledonian Mine, a historic gold mine. Passing through beech forest, it takes about an hour and a half to complete. The remnants of the steam engine and quartz stamping battery at the Caledonian Mine provide a glimpse into the area's rich gold mining history.
Crossing the river requires careful attention. The Paparoa National Park Visitor Centre or the Reefton Visitor Information Centre can provide additional details.
To get to the starting point of the trail, take the forestry road that turns off the Reefton highway SH69 just over the Awarau or Larry River bridge, 16 km north of Reefton. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there. As the end of the road is not in google maps, however, you'll need to keep driving another 3.5km to the end of the 4WD road.
