Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
The Giant Circuit is the longest trail in Te Mata Park, leading you to the summit through varied terrain and spectacular viewpoints. The route passes through the Giant Redwoods, follows the southern boundary of the Park, and climbs a steep switchback section below the summit. Expect narrow and exposed sections with steep drop-offs, and note that part of the track between the Main Gates Car Park and the Saddle is shared with uphill mountain bikers. Allow 1.5–3 hours return. Suitable for people with moderate to high fitness, as the trail includes uneven or muddy ground, steep inclines, and challenging terrain. Toilets and picnic tables are located at the Main Gates Car Park. Please take litter with you or use the bins located at the Main Gates, Tauroa Road, and the Summit. Dogs are allowed off-lead but must be controlled at all times, as stock is regularly grazed. Bikes are permitted on sections marked with orange "Shared Track" stickers. The Park is located South East of Havelock North. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there, but note that th e Main Gates Car Park and the upper section of Te Mata Peak Road above the Peak House are closed to vehicles from 10pm to 5.30am every day. Treasured by many, Te Mata Park is a taonga tuku iho (a heavenly gift). It is a landmark with outstanding geological features, unique flora and fauna, and a place of deep spiritual and cultural significance. You can make a donation to help with preserving this taonga on the Te Mata Park website .
Dogs allowed off-lead but under control.
