Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Waitaha Pā offers a short, steep walk to a scenic lookout rich in Māori heritage. The track is well marked with orange triangles and includes a few stiles. Along the way, there are glimpses of the Whanganui River before reaching a picnic table and lookout with panoramic views of the valley and surrounding hills. Wear sturdy footwear, as the track can be slippery after rain or in winter. Waitaha Pā is located between Whanganui and the village of Upokongaro, around 3.5 km from the Whanganui boundary, on State Highway 4. Look for the large DOC sign. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
Dogs on a leash only.
