Compare billing periods correctly

A calendar-month plan normally renews 12 times a year. A 28-day plan renews roughly 13 times, so its advertised renewal price should not be multiplied by only 12.

Include every mobile connection

Group and companion pricing can make the main connection expensive and later connections cheaper. Compare the total household cost and the average cost per person.

Separate max-speed and endless data

Some “endless” plans continue at a reduced speed after a max-speed allowance. Enter the max-speed amount as limited data unless the plan genuinely provides unlimited max-speed use.

Normalise introductory offers

A temporary discount can look attractive without being the cheapest over a year. Enter the discount per renewal and the exact number of discounted cycles.

How to compare NZ mobile phone plans

Start with the number of people who need service and a realistic estimate of mobile data used away from Wi-Fi. Enter each provider’s current recurring price, billing cycle, additional-connection charge and necessary add-ons. Add SIM, connection, device or other one-off differences only when they affect the comparison.

Then check coverage at home, work and frequent travel locations, max-speed data, reduced-speed policy, hotspot rules, roaming, international inclusions, number ownership, customer support and early-termination terms. The lowest estimated cash cost is not automatically the most suitable service.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare mobile plans in New Zealand?

Compare the same number of connections and the same time period. Include the recurring plan price, additional lines, add-ons, one-off charges, temporary discounts, billing frequency, data speed and minimum term.

Why does a 28-day mobile plan cost more over a year?

A 28-day plan renews about 13 times in an average year, while a calendar-month plan normally renews 12 times. Comparing only the advertised renewal price can therefore hide an extra payment.

Can I compare One NZ mobile plans here?

Yes. Enter the current One NZ price and inclusions manually, then compare them with another One NZ plan or a plan from Spark, 2degrees or another provider. KiwiTools is independent.

What does endless mobile data mean?

An endless plan can continue providing data after its max-speed allowance is used, but at a reduced speed. Read the provider’s current speed, fair-use and hotspot terms rather than treating endless as unlimited max-speed data.

Should I include mobile phone repayments?

Include only differences relevant to the decision. If one plan requires a device repayment, trade-in, upfront payment or repayment balance, add the comparable recurring or one-off cost and read the device terms separately.

Does the cheapest mobile plan mean the best plan?

No. Coverage where you live and travel, max-speed data, reduced speed, hotspotting, roaming, customer service, number control and contract flexibility can matter more than a small price difference.

Does this calculator retrieve live provider prices?

No. It is a browser-only calculator with no mobile-provider API. Enter current published prices yourself and confirm the provider’s checkout summary and terms before joining.
