Key points

Name the payment before calculating it

Ordinary overtime and regular payments are normally included with that pay period’s earnings.

A one-off annual bonus, redundancy payment or similar amount can be an extra pay with its own withholding method.

Final income tax depends on total annual taxable income, so a high deduction from one bonus is not necessarily the final cost.

Regular pay, overtime and a bonus are not withheld the same way

This table separates the payment types people often bundle together as “extra tax”. Final annual income tax still depends on total taxable income.

Overtime is not automatically a lump sum

A Saturday shift paid with ordinary wages is generally part of that pay period’s gross earnings. There is no special “overtime tax” rate. More gross pay can place the extra dollars in a higher marginal band, but the earlier income keeps its original treatment.

Regular commissions or bonuses can also form part of normal earnings. Payroll needs the payment’s real pattern, not the label someone typed into a spreadsheet.

One-off bonuses use the extra-pay rules

An annual performance bonus is commonly an extra pay. Payroll looks at annualised income and the payment circumstances to select a withholding rate, then considers ACC and other applicable deductions.

That can produce a chunky PAYE line. It does not mean Inland Revenue permanently taxes every bonus dollar at a unique penalty rate; the person’s reported income is reconciled through the annual assessment.

A $5,000 bonus can expose bad calculator assumptions

Suppose someone on $74,000 receives a $5,000 annual bonus. Treating the bonus as a normal weekly wage exaggerates the annual salary, while applying one flat average tax rate ignores that the payment crosses an income-tax threshold. Both shortcuts can be wrong in different directions.

Use the employer’s extra-pay method or ask payroll for the rate and annualised-income basis. Inland Revenue’s ordinary PAYE calculator explicitly excludes special bonuses and other lump sums.

Check more than income tax

KiwiSaver commonly applies to a bonus unless an exception such as certain redundancy payments is relevant. Student-loan deductions may also apply, and the ACC earners’ levy is charged only while liable earnings remain below the cap.

A net-bonus estimate should show those components separately. Otherwise “tax took half” may actually describe tax, saving and loan repayment bundled into one complaint.

Frequently asked questions

Are bonuses taxed more in New Zealand?

A one-off bonus may be withheld at an extra-pay rate, but final annual income tax is based on total taxable income.

Is overtime taxed at a special rate?

No. Ordinary overtime is generally included in the pay period’s earnings and processed through normal PAYE.

Can I use the IRD PAYE calculator for a bonus?

The ordinary calculator excludes extra pays such as special bonuses. Payroll must use the relevant extra-pay rules.

Does KiwiSaver come out of a bonus?

Often yes. Some payments, including certain redundancy amounts, have different treatment, so check the payment type.

Will excess tax on a bonus come back as a refund?

If total PAYE exceeds the tax and levy ultimately assessed, the difference may be refunded. A refund is not guaranteed merely because the bonus deduction looked high.
