Estimate only: Inland Revenue issues the official income tax assessment. Check all income and deduction information in myIR before confirming an assessment or filing a return.

What this refund estimate compares

The calculator applies the current progressive income-tax brackets to income after entered eligible expenses. It subtracts IETC only when selected, then compares the estimated liability with total income tax already paid.

Where to find the numbers in myIR

Open your Income tax account, choose Income summary and download or view Income details. Use total income before the expenses entered here and the total tax paid figure. Do not use the larger PAYE total: PAYE includes the ACC earners' levy.

How the estimate is calculated

This is a transparent comparison rather than a promise that a refund is available. For example, $75,000 of income and $15,000 of tax paid produces an estimated refund of $279.50 before other adjustments.

  1. 1

    Adjust taxable income

Subtract only eligible non-business expenses entered, without allowing expenses to reduce income below zero.

  2. 2

    Estimate final tax

Apply the current tax brackets and, when selected, the independent earner tax credit.

  3. 3

    Compare tax paid

Tax paid above the estimate produces a possible refund; tax paid below it produces a possible bill.

Current individual income-tax settings

For 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, rates run from 10.5% on the first $15,600 of taxable income to 39% on income over $180,000. Each rate applies only to income within that bracket.

Independent earner tax credit

The calculator can apply a full year of IETC based on the entered income, but the switch does not test every eligibility rule or partial-year entitlement. Do not select it solely because your income falls inside the configured range; Working for Families and some payments can affect eligibility.

Eligible non-business expenses

IRD permits limited claims for people whose income is already taxed, including some tax-return preparation costs, qualifying income-protection insurance and certain investment-related costs. Keep supporting records and confirm that a cost is eligible before entering it.

Why the official result can differ

Wrong tax codes, multiple jobs, lump sums, interest, dividends, PIE income, overseas income, Working for Families, write-offs and changes reported after calculation can all alter an assessment. Complex business, rental or overseas situations need a complete return calculation.

Official sources

The calculation uses the tax settings held in KiwiTools’ dated configuration. Inland Revenue remains the source for your recorded income, deductions, eligibility and final assessment.

Frequently asked questions

How does the NZ tax refund calculator work?

It subtracts eligible non-business expenses from the total annual income entered, calculates income tax using the current brackets, applies full-year IETC when selected, and compares the result with income tax already paid. A positive difference is shown as an estimated refund and a negative difference as estimated tax to pay.

Where can I find my income and tax paid?

In myIR, open your Income tax account and select Income summary. The detailed Income details information separates total income, total tax paid and the ACC earners’ levy. Enter total tax paid here, not PAYE, ACC, KiwiSaver or student-loan deductions.

Does Inland Revenue automatically pay tax refunds?

If Inland Revenue has all the information needed for an automatic income tax assessment, the assessment shows whether you have a refund, tax to pay or a balanced position. Any refund is paid using the bank-account details held by Inland Revenue.

Should I include the ACC earners’ levy as tax paid?

No. This calculator compares income-tax liability with total income tax paid. Use the total tax paid figure from your detailed myIR Income details information and do not enter the larger PAYE amount or add ACC, KiwiSaver or student-loan deductions.

What expenses can a salary or wage earner claim?

IRD allows limited non-business expenses in eligible circumstances, such as some tax-return preparation costs, qualifying income-protection insurance, certain investment-related costs and late-payment interest paid to IRD. Only enter expenses you can support and that IRD permits.

Is the estimated refund guaranteed?

No. The official result comes from Inland Revenue. Working for Families, overseas income and tax credits, PIE income, donation claims, business or rental activity, incorrect tax codes, write-offs and other adjustments can materially change the result.
