Personalised Plate Rules in New Zealand
Understand New Zealand personalised plate rules, including character limits, rejected combinations, approved colours, display duties and vehicle differences.
Key points
Check the rules while your idea is still easy to change
Cars and most other vehicles can use up to six characters; motorcycles, mopeds and trailers are limited to five under the regulations.
A combination can be declined even when it fits the character limit.
Only NZTA or an authorised agent can issue a legal plate.
The plate must remain secure, upright and clearly visible on the vehicle.

Character limits by vehicle type
The legal ceiling depends on the vehicle receiving the personalised plate, not simply on what fits inside an online text box.
| Check | Maximum characters | Plates displayed | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car, ute, van or most other vehicles | Up to 6 | Usually front and rear | Both plates must show the same identifier |
| Motorcycle or moped | Up to 5 | One at the rear | Test readability in the smaller format |
| Trailer or caravan | Up to 5 | One at the rear | Do not plan around a six-character car plate |
Count for the vehicle that will wear the plate
New Zealand regulations allow up to five letters or numbers for a motorcycle, moped or trailer, and up to six in other cases. Letters and numbers share that allowance; a visual gap, caption or styling choice does not create another character.
If you may move the plate to a motorcycle later, a five-character idea gives you more flexibility than a six-character car plate. That is a practical choice, not an extra legal requirement for cars.
Available and acceptable are two different tests
The Registrar can decline combinations reserved for official use, likely to cause confusion or mistake, or considered objectionable. Availability and acceptability are related checks, but they are not the same check.
A generator can help you spot obvious problems and create alternatives, but it cannot approve or reserve a combination. Only the official process can decide whether it will be allocated.
Check personalised plate availabilityChoose a plate people can read
Use an issued plate, not a convincing copy
NZTA says personalised plates may use white or silver characters on black, or black, red or blue characters on white. The safe route is to choose an approved product through the official provider, where the design and manufacture are part of the order.
A repainted ordinary plate, a printed copy or a decorative lookalike is not an authorised registration plate. If you want a particular colour or shape for road use, choose an available approved design rather than trying to recreate it elsewhere.
The display rules continue after purchase
Plates must be fixed securely, upright and positioned so the characters remain visible. Most vehicles need matching front and rear plates; motorcycles, mopeds, tractors and trailers display one at the rear.
A bike rack, towball load, dark cover or a layer of dirt can obscure an otherwise valid plate. If a temporary load blocks the identifier, check whether a supplementary plate is the right solution before travelling.
A quick check before ordering
Write the identifier in plain text and count it. Read it without a caption or special spacing, then ask someone else what they see; a second reading can reveal an accidental word that you missed. Check the finalist in the official builder and read the current order conditions before paying.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters can a personalised plate have in NZ?
The regulations allow up to six letters or numbers in most cases, but only up to five for motorcycles, mopeds and trailers.
Can a plate be rejected even if the combination is available?
Yes. The Registrar can decline combinations on grounds that include official use, confusion or mistake, and objectionable content.
Can I make my own personalised number plate?
Not for road use. NZTA says only it or its agents can issue legal plates.
Are spaces counted as characters on an NZ plate?
Treat the legal identifier as its letters and numbers. A visual gap or plate styling does not let you exceed the applicable five- or six-character limit.
Do personalised plates need to be visible at all times?
Yes. They must be securely fixed, upright and clearly visible; temporary attachments that obscure them may require a supplementary plate.
