Ideas for your vehicle
Start with a vehicle-specific generator
Each page opens the generator with the matching preset and offers examples written for that kind of vehicle. Motorcycle and trailer pages also apply their specific five-character limit.
Ute personalised plate ideas NZ
A good ute plate can point to the work it does, the places it goes or the person behind the wheel. Start with your name, trade, farm, model nickname or an off-road theme and turn it into a combination that stays readable within six characters.
Explore ideas4WD personalised plate ideas NZ
Build a plate idea around what your 4WD is for: rough tracks, long-distance touring, weekends at the bach or simply a vehicle you are proud of. The generator mixes your own word with compact 4WD references and keeps the result inside the NZ general-purpose limit.
Explore ideasEV personalised plate ideas NZ
An EV plate can be quietly clever or make the electric connection obvious. Use a name, charging reference, electrical term or clean-driving idea, then compare combinations that stay readable within the six-character general-purpose format.
Explore ideasMotorcycle personalised plate ideas NZ
Motorcycle plates leave less room for the idea, which makes every character work harder. Begin with a rider nickname, the feeling of the ride, a touring reference or a compact version of your name; this preset limits results to five characters.
Explore ideasClassic car personalised plate ideas NZ
A classic-car plate works best when it adds to the vehicle’s story rather than competing with it. Draw from the era, engine, body style, restoration journey or a nickname you already use, then shape the idea into six clear characters or fewer.
Explore ideasCampervan personalised plate ideas NZ
Campervans often acquire a personality long before they acquire a name. Turn a travel ritual, family nickname, favourite kind of stop or life-on-the-road phrase into a plate idea that remains clear within the six-character format.
Explore ideasTrailer and caravan personalised plate ideas NZ
A trailer plate has only five characters available, so the strongest ideas start small. Use a towing reference, compact caravan nickname, work purpose or owner initials, then check whether the result still reads naturally without spaces.

Four ideas, four different approaches
These examples show how length, a local reference and number-word play affect an idea. They are illustrations, with no availability check.
NZUTE
Five characters: NZ provides the local connection and UTE keeps the vehicle reference readable.
CAMPER
Six letters: a complete word for a camping enthusiast, with no number substitutions to explain.
UTE4U
Five characters: 4 stands for “for”, giving the idea a different reading from UTE alone.
EVNZ
Four characters: an electric-vehicle theme and New Zealand reference in a compact combination.
Start with a meaning you want to keep
A name, work identity or favourite activity gives a short combination something to say. A ute owner might start with NZUTE; a camping enthusiast might prefer CAMPER. Read each proposed combination carefully to decide whether the abbreviation still carries your meaning.
For business use, think about what a customer could remember after one glance. A readable word can be more useful than a complicated acronym. A plate is not a substitute for a business name, phone number or other contact details.
Working within the character limit
General-purpose personalised plates can have up to six characters made from letters, numbers or both. Regulation 34 sets a five-character maximum for motorcycles, mopeds and trailers. The generator applies that shorter ceiling when either matching vehicle type is selected.
This generator counts only the proposed combination, using A–Z and 0–9. Spaces in your input are removed; punctuation and accents are not converted automatically. Choose Short & clean for letters-only ideas with up to five characters. A result is a length check, not confirmation that it can be issued.
Use number swaps sparingly
A number can stand for a sound, such as 4 for “for” in UTE4U, or replace a similar-looking letter. Take extra care with combinations that contain both O and 0 or I and 1. You can choose letters only to avoid number substitutions.
Try saying the exact letters and numbers aloud. If you have to explain several substitutions, try a simpler suggestion. A different spelling may also change the meaning; read the entire combination rather than judging each character on its own.
Check an idea with KiwiPlates
NZTA directs buyers to KiwiPlates for personalised plates. Use Check live availability for the current result supplied by KiwiPlates, then continue with KiwiPlates to confirm the intended plate format and purchase options. KiwiTools cannot reserve plates or sell entitlement.
The generator uses a curated set of ideas and a basic language filter. It cannot identify every offensive, misleading or confusing interpretation, and it does not provide an official acceptability assessment. Review the combination and any captions together before applying.
New Zealand plate information
NZTA explains personalised plates and how different vehicle types display them. Current regulations set a general ceiling of six characters and a five-character ceiling for motorcycles, mopeds and trailers. KiwiPlates provides the official availability and design options.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters can a personalised NZ plate have?
General-purpose personalised identifiers can have up to six letters, numbers or a combination. Regulation 34 limits motorcycle, moped and trailer personalised identifiers to five. The generator applies the relevant limit after you choose a vehicle type.
Are these personalised plate combinations available?
Generated combinations are ideas until you select Check live availability. KiwiTools then requests the current result from KiwiPlates, but availability can change and KiwiPlates must still confirm approval and purchase options.
Can I generate ideas from my name or initials?
Yes. Add a name or word using A–Z, 0–9 and spaces. A full name also creates first-name, surname and initial combinations. The generator adds consonant abbreviations, alternative one- or two-number swaps, compact names, NZ combinations and suffixes. Choose a vehicle to add relevant combinations such as EV, UTE or 4WD. Use See more ideas to browse the remaining results.
Which vehicle types can I choose?
The generator covers cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs, electric and hybrid vehicles, classic and performance cars, motorcycles and mopeds, vans and tradie vehicles, trucks, motorhomes and campervans, and trailers and caravans. The selection guides the ideas and shows the expected general-purpose, motorcycle or trailer plate format. Confirm the final format with KiwiPlates.
Will the generator shorten a long name?
Yes. Long words and abbreviations can be shortened to fit within six characters, so read each result to check that it still has the meaning you want. Suffixes such as NZ and 4U are kept intact. Accented names and names with macrons are not automatically transliterated.
How do the idea styles work?
All styles includes every matching transformation. Letters only excludes numbers. Number-play keeps ideas with at least one number. Short & clean keeps letters-only ideas with at most five characters. Sound-alike keeps phonetic substitutions such as GREAT to GR8, playful 4U endings and word-plus-suffix ideas. Results fit the limit for the selected vehicle.
Can I exclude numbers from my suggestions?
Yes. Select Letters only under Idea style. Select Number-play for ideas that contain at least one number, or All styles to see both kinds of combination.
Does checking a plate idea reserve it?
No. An availability check does not reserve or purchase the combination. Continue with KiwiPlates to confirm approval, current options and any purchase.
Is the plate preview an approved plate design?
No. The preview is an illustration of the characters only. It is not a manufacturing template or an approved design. View current official designs and confirm any format restrictions with KiwiPlates.
