Key points
One salary can hide several hourly rates
Divide salary by paid weeks and actual or expected hours—not a convenient “standard” that the job ignores.
An $84,000 salary is about $40.38 an hour at 40 hours a week, but only $32.31 at 50 hours.
For minimum-wage checking, use hours worked in the relevant pay period and current Employment New Zealand rules.
How extra hours change the value of an $84,000 salary
This is why an offer should be tested against hours actually expected, not only the contracted headline.
| Check | Weeks | Average weekly hours | Effective gross hourly rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40-hour week | 52 | 40 | $40.38 |
| 45-hour week | 52 | 45 | $35.90 |
| 50-hour week | 52 | 50 | $32.31 |
| 46 paid working weeks | 46 | 40 | $45.65 |
Use the hours the job will consume
An $84,000 salary divided by 52 weeks and 40 hours is $40.38 an hour. At 45 hours it falls to $35.90; at 50, $32.31. The annual salary stayed still while the value of an hour moved by more than $8.
That is the useful calculation when an offer says “reasonable additional hours.” Ask what happened in the team during the last busy quarter rather than trusting a 40-hour denominator nobody works.

Do not remove paid leave from the denominator by accident
A permanent salaried employee is paid while taking annual holidays, so dividing the salary by only 48 weeks can inflate the apparent hourly rate. For an employment-package comparison, 52 paid weeks is normally the clean starting point.
A worked-hour analysis is a different lens and can exclude leave deliberately, but label it. Mixing the two is how two calculators produce different answers while both formulas look tidy.
Check the whole package before comparing offers
Base salary, a probable bonus and employer KiwiSaver are not interchangeable. A total-remuneration figure may already include the employer contribution, while another offer pays it on top. Put each component on its own line before converting.
Benefits have value only if you will use them. A car park near work might be worth real cash; an aspirational bonus with no clear measure should not be treated as guaranteed hourly pay.
When the calculation becomes a rights question
Salaried employees still need to receive at least the applicable minimum wage for every hour worked in each pay period. A high annual headline does not excuse unlimited hours if the period calculation falls below that floor.
Record actual hours when this is a concern and check the employment agreement. A rough annual division can flag a problem, but Employment New Zealand or employment advice is the right next step for a disputed entitlement.
Frequently asked questions
What is an $80,000 salary per hour in NZ?
At 40 hours over 52 paid weeks, it is about $38.46 gross per hour. Longer average weeks reduce the effective rate.
Should salary be divided by 2,080 hours?
Only when 40 hours for 52 paid weeks reflects the comparison you want. Use actual expected hours when testing the job’s real hourly value.
Does unpaid overtime reduce my hourly rate?
Yes. The salary is spread across more hours, so the effective gross rate falls.
Can a salary fall below minimum wage?
Yes, if hours worked in a pay period make the resulting hourly pay lower than the applicable minimum. Minimum-wage rights still apply to salaried employees.
Should employer KiwiSaver be included?
Show it separately and check whether it is on top of salary or inside a total-remuneration package.
