When Will I Get My Tax Refund in NZ?

Learn when NZ tax refunds are paid, how the IRD assessment timetable works, what can delay payment, and when to check myIR or contact Inland Revenue directly.

Key points

The short answer on NZ tax-refund timing

For automatically assessed taxpayers, Inland Revenue starts issuing assessments from the last weekend in May and continues through June and July.

If an assessment confirms a refund and IRD has a valid bank account, the money should usually reach that account within a few days of processing.

An information request, an IR3 return, incorrect bank details or an existing IRD debt can change the timing or amount paid.

Most automatic refunds arrive between late May and July

The New Zealand tax year closes on 31 March, but refunds do not all appear in the first week of April. Inland Revenue first gathers income information from employers, banks and other payers, then starts issuing automatic income tax assessments from the last weekend in May. The process continues through June and July, so two people in the same workplace may receive their results weeks apart.

IRD says refunds from these assessments are paid into the bank account it holds from late May to the end of July. Once a refund has been processed, the bank normally needs only a few days to place it in the account. The assessment date matters more than the date a friend received their refund.

Your route through the tax system affects the date

A person whose income is already known to IRD may receive an automatic assessment. That commonly covers salary or wages and taxed investment income. If IRD asks for more information, the assessment cannot be finalised until the requested details are supplied and checked.

Someone who must file an Individual income tax return (IR3) follows a different timetable. The refund can be processed only after the return has been filed and assessed. Filing early can help, but speed is not a reason to leave out income, expenses or overseas details that belong in the return.

Why a confirmed refund may not reach your bank

First check the refund bank account in myIR. A closed account, a mistyped number or no account on file can stop the payment. IRD says a rejected payment returns to it; it may try an updated account or ask for valid details.

IRD can also use some or all of a refund to pay debt on an Inland Revenue account. A Working for Families balance can affect an income-tax refund too. In that situation, the assessment may still show a credit even though a smaller amount—or nothing—lands in the bank. IRD sends a separate notice when it applies a refund to debt.

What to do when the refund seems late

Open the Income tax account in myIR and check whether the assessment is complete, waiting for information or still unprocessed. Confirm the tax year, read any letters or messages, and compare the displayed bank account with your current account. If the payment status says it has been issued, allow the few days IRD says banks may need.

If the assessment needs information, respond through the task shown in myIR. If the payment has bounced back, the bank details are correct and enough banking time has passed, send IRD a secure message or use its published contact options. A calculator can estimate a likely refund, but it cannot see or speed up an IRD payment.

Frequently asked questions

What month do NZ tax refunds come out?

For automatic income tax assessments, IRD starts processing from the last weekend in May and continues through June and July. IR3 filers receive any refund after their return has been filed and assessed.

How long does an IRD refund take after it is processed?

IRD says the money should be in the nominated bank account within a few days. The exact banking time varies, and a rejected or invalid account can delay it.

Why has someone else received a refund before me?

Assessments are not all processed on one date. IRD may also be waiting for payer information or a response from you, so another person’s payment date is not a reliable deadline for yours.

Will IRD email or text me about my refund?

IRD may notify you that there is activity in myIR, but sign in through the official IRD website rather than a link in an unexpected message. A genuine refund does not require handing online-banking credentials to a third party.

Can an IRD debt reduce my tax refund?

Yes. IRD may use some or all of a refund to pay debt you already owe, including certain income-tax or Working for Families balances, and will notify you if it does so.

Can KiwiTools tell me the exact payment date?

No. The calculator can estimate a refund or bill from the details entered, but only myIR and Inland Revenue can show the official assessment and payment status.
