Anaura Bay is a stunning 2 km sweep of sandy beach, backed by forest and farmland. At the northern end, a walkway was designed as a loop through the Anaura Bay Scenic Reserve, pine forest and open paddocks, but today only a short section remains open due to storm damage. The track starts at Nuhiti Bridge, about 100 metres past the entrance to the Anaura Bay Campsite . From here it crosses a stile and climbs beside Waipare Stream through young coastal forest alive with birdlife, before reaching an open paddock. A brief climb leads to a ridge saddle with glimpses of Anaura Bay, Motuoroi Island and the coastline to the south. Beyond this point the track is closed, so walkers must return the same way to Anaura Bay Road. Our friends at Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails have great information about the history of the trail. The walkway is located at the northern end of Anaura Bay, 13km north of Tolaga Bay, and 7 km following a winding side road to the coast. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
