This tramping track offers an excellent long day walk to the lake or an overnight stay at Green Lake Hut. Start either from the saddle on Borland Road (lefthand side of the map - zoom in to see Borland Bivvy), or the Lake Monowai carpark and campsite (righthand side of the map). Borland Road to Green Lake Hut - 3.5 hrs, 6.8km From the Borland Road, the track passes Borland Bivvy and low lying areas of tussock and small lakes and low beech covered saddles. Turning off at the junction to Green Lake, the track climbs a steep bush-clad hill before descending to the shores of Green Lake. The Green Lake Hut is at the far end of the tussock covered shoreline. Lake Monowai Carpark to Green Lake Hut - 6 hrs, 11km. The track is known to be very muddy and overgrown, so pay attention to the orange markers, particularly when finding your way around windfall and when going through the tussock which can camouflage the markers well. Ensure you have a gps/downloaded map. This track is mainly in forest with a gradual climb to the hut, going through swamps and tussock with some steep sections.
