Kaiate Falls (also known as Te Rerekawau Falls) is a stunning series of cascades set in a bush-filled ravine where the Kaiate Stream tumbles over ignimbrite bluffs. Just a 30-minute drive from Tauranga, this reserve combines beautiful forest, refreshing swimming spots, and spectacular waterfalls. From the car park, a grassed picnic area offers views of Mauao and the Port of Tauranga, along with access to a public toilet. A short walk leads you onto well-formed tracks, with junctions clearly signposted. The main track takes you first to the top of the falls, with views toward Mauao, then down to the base of the upper series of cascades before continuing to the lower falls. The walk is easy to follow but includes steep sections and sets of steps, so a moderate level of fitness and care is recommended, especially after rain when surfaces can be slippery. Along the way, seats provide quiet spots to pause and soak up the sounds of native forest and the sight of the cascading waterfalls. After heavy rain, the falls roar with powerful energy, making this a truly unforgettable Bay of Plenty experience. Please take note of all signage about water quality and safety. This walkway is open, but please be cautious as the council are still working on the track after it was badly damaged from all the wild weather over the last few months. Kaiate Falls is a 30 minute drive from Tauranga. Sign-posted from Welcome Bay Road as “Kaiate Falls". Drive up Waitao Road and after about 4.9km turn left at Kaiate Falls Road. The scenic reserve containing the falls is a further 1km and a vehicle track leads to the car park. Use this location on Google Maps to help you find your way there.
