Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
This track begins at the top of the Kopu Hikuai Road (SH25A) and follows an undulating ridgeline through rugged Coromandel terrain. On a fine day, you’ll enjoy impressive views of both the east and west coasts. The route finishes with a steep climb to Kaitarakihi summit (852 m), where chains assist the final ascent. The views from the top are outstanding, and for those not wishing to make the final climb, there’s a pleasant lunch spot at the base.
No track beyond the summit The track ends at the summit – there is no route through to the Kauaeranga Valley. The former track beyond the summit is closed to protect kauri from kauri dieback disease. Recommended for experienced trampers only This is a rough and demanding tramping track with many roots, muddy and boggy sections, and steep climbs where hands are needed. The track has numerous ups and downs, requiring good fitness and endurance. It becomes extremely slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear with good grip are essential. Steep drops and climbing required Near the summit, there is a rocky climb with steep drop-offs. Chains are provided for assistance, but the section remains difficult and technical. Take care, move slowly, and turn back if you are not confident. There is no water available on this track so take plenty with you.
Clean your footwear, tyres and equipment before and after visiting our kauri forests. If you are walking your dog, you should also make sure you clean their paws. Use cleaning stations every time you pass one while you are walking in a park. Stay on the tracks and keep off kauri roots. Stay away from closed tracks. Don't remove soil from, or bring soil into, areas with kauri trees.
About 15 km from Kopu along SH25A. The track is signposted and parking is opposite the track or further down the road at a rest area. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
