Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
The track starts at the old gold works at Golden Cross. It continues to the saddle with views of the Kaimai Ranges and the Hauraki Plains. Then you drop into the bush on an old track the miners used. You continue through old bush and puriri trees along a stream, past a swampy area with old gold processing equipment. Then you go down through the bush till you come to a bridge. From the bridge, a gravelled track follows along the Marototo Valley past some gorgeous rock features till you come to a deep swimming hole. You can walk back up from there or take another track, such as the Wires Track which is 6km down the road. The Wires Track is also fascinating as it was cut for the old telegraph lines to Auckland and has fascinating steps that suddenly appear in the middle of nowhere.
There is no practical access to the nearby historic mining area of Komata Reefs. The pine forest at the end of Komata Reefs Road was felled and replanted in 2012 and is no longer suitable for tramping.
