Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
The track starts beside the car park and climbs steeply via wooden steps and gravel for a short distance. The track is well formed and steep before reaching an intersection on the saddle. To the left, a short out and back path leads to a communications tower where the best views await. Back at the intersection, continue downhill towards Rings Beach, walking through newly planted kauri forest and native bush. Take a break and sit on a bench to rest and enjoy the view of Rings Beach. Return via the same track or along the coast via Bluff Road that is now closed to traffic due to a few slips but is accessible on foot.
The track is well signposted There is a shoe cleaning station at the start and finish to protect the young kauri trees Dogs are allowed on leash No toilets are available Bluff Road from Rings Beach to Matarangi is permanently closed due to a collapsed cliff.
Clean your footwear, tyres and equipment before and after visiting our kauri forests. If you are walking your dog, you should also make sure you clean their paws. Use cleaning stations every time you pass one while you are walking in a park. Stay on the tracks and keep off kauri roots. Stay away from closed tracks. Don't remove soil from, or bring soil into, areas with kauri trees.
Head west on SH25 towards Matarangi. Turn right onto Matarangi Dr. Turn right onto Kenwood Dr. Turn right onto Goldfields Dr. Continue onto Bluff Rd Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
