Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Hidden away behind the hustle and bustle of Queenstown is magical Moke Lake. Starting the track from the far end of the DOC campground, cross a narrow wooden plank over the lake inlet to access the top of the lake (just like the TV show of the same name that was filmed here in 2013). The 6.9km track is well formed, well signposted, and follows the lake edge all the way around. If ever unsure , keep the lake on your left-hand side (although you can choose to walk in the opposite direction). Boardwalks have been established to cross the wetlands at the end of each fork in the lake. There are some undulations (approx. 100m elevation gain) and st i les to cross along the way, as well as joining with the road you came in on for the final stretch of the loop back to the campground. If you choose to visit on a calm day , the lake can generate some spectacular mirror images that are not to be missed.
Moke Lake is a great spot for camping, cycling, walking and running. Ben Lomond Station is a working farm that surrounds the area so be mindful of animals on the road, in particular lambs in Spring. There is a strict no dogs policy.
There is a DOC campsite with long drop toilets at Moke Lake for self-contained and non-self-contained vehicles, alternatively there is also a larger campsite at 12 Mile Delta (on the shores of Lake Wakatipu) further down the road towards Glenorchy.
From Queenstown, head towards Glenorchy. After approx. 10 minutes of driving, turn right onto Moke Lake Road. The road climbs up via a number of switch backs until you cross a cattle stop. Proceed straight on to another cattle stop where the road turns to gravel. You will pass a small lake (Lake Kirkpatrick) on your left before Moke Lake comes into view. Follow the road until it turns left into the DOC campground where you can park. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
