Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Track Description This walk is a steep climb up a hill to the top of an island. There used to be a Māori Pā at the south end of the island, but it is now a predator free bird sanctuary. Please check your bags for any mice before disembarking. There are stairs on the track and it is not suitable for buggies. Enjoy the regenerating native bush as you make your way to the top. Fantastic views of Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui can be enjoyed along the way and especially at the top. There’s a bird viewing station a short walk along from the jetty. If you have binoculars, it would be worth adding them to your bag. Don’t forget sunscreen, water, and a warm, waterproof layer. Take antihistamine if you are allergic to wasp stings. Not all cell providers have signal coverage in the area. No toilets are on Motuara Island. Getting There There is no road access to Motuara Island. Access is via water taxi, kayak, private boat, or as part of a commercial tour. Helpful resources Find tips, guides and how-to videos to help you prepare for your walk at mountainsafety.org.nz
