Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
From the Makahu Saddle carpark, follow the track to Ngahere Base, a former hydrological survey site, then continue down an old road to the stream. After crossing the bridge, the Matauria Ridge Track veers right, while the Ngahere Loop Track climbs straight ahead. The track offers around 30 minutes of easy walking through beech forest, crossing Ngahere Hill (1114 metres) before reaching Kaweka Road, just over 1.8 km from the carpark. To complete the loop, walk back along Kaweka Road to Makahu Saddle carpark, or return the same way via the forest track. This is a mountainous area. Visitors should be prepared for sudden weather changes. Extreme fire conditions can exist during summer. The park is a restricted fire area, which means permits to light fires are required all year round. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
Dogs with a DOC permit for recreational hunting or management purposes only.
