An outing to the stunning Te Hau Valley Giant Redwoods is the perfect spot for a picnic or even a game of hide and seek among the towering trees. The grove is home to over 220 redwoods, many more than 40 metres high. The loop track is the shortest and most direct option to the Redwoods, and takes in a lookout over the Heretaunga Plains and pockets of beautiful native bush. Walking time is under two hours return, suitable for people of moderate fitness. The track is generally well formed but includes some rough, muddy, or uneven sections with simple switchbacks and inclines. Toilets and picnic tables are located at the Main Gates Car Park. Please take litter with you or use the bins located at the Main Gates, Tauroa Road, and the Summit. Dogs are allowed off-lead but must be controlled at all times, as stock is regularly grazed. Bikes are permitted on sections marked with orange "Shared Track" stickers. The Park is located South East of Havelock North. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there, but note that th e Main Gates Car Park and the upper section of Te Mata Peak Road above the Peak House are closed to vehicles from 10pm to 5.30am every day. Treasured by many, Te Mata Park is a taonga tuku iho (a heavenly gift). It is a landmark with outstanding geological features, unique flora and fauna, and a place of deep spiritual and cultural significance. You can make a donation to help with preserving this taonga on the Te Mata Park website .
