Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
The track starts as a well-formed gravel road before entering the bush. There are several stream crossings along the way, including a ford. The track is mainly flat and sheltered under the forest canopy. After 1.5 km, a short side track leads to the old Monowai Battery site. Upon approaching the kauri grove, the track will climb slightly before encountering the wooden steps leading to the grove. Once at the top, take a moment to sit down on a wooden bench and enjoy being surrounded by these mature silent giants. From here, the track becomes a tramping track, rising steeply up to Te Puru Track which follows the ridge. From here, follow the directions to Crosbies Hut, which is around an hour away. The track from here on is more mellow, with a gentle downhill section and then short climb to then traverse across to the hut.
After Kauri Grove, the track gets very steep, and is "quite grunty" according to some. After heavy rain, expect the track to be muddy.
Clean your footwear, tyres and equipment before and after visiting our kauri forests. If you are walking your dog, you should also make sure you clean their paws. Use cleaning stations every time you pass one while you are walking in a park. Stay on the tracks and keep off kauri roots. Stay away from closed tracks. Don't remove soil from, or bring soil into, areas with kauri trees.
Crosbies Hut is a serviced 10 bunk hut which requires booking online. It was built in 2010 and offers panoramic views of the Coromandel Main Range - north towards Maumaupaki and Mercury Bay and from the Firth of Thames in the west to Table Mountain and the Upper Kauaeranga Valley in the east. The lights of Whitianga are visible at night.
Head northwest on State Hwy 25 toward Waiomu Valley Rd. Turn right onto Waiomu Valley Rd. Walking access begins at the end of the sealed Waiomu Valley Road. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
