What is the best alternative to CarJam in NZ?
For a consumer wanting another packaged vehicle-history report, MotorWeb is the most direct comparison. Its public VIR covers major legal-status and history risks, while CarJam offers its own full report, cached basic information and separately priced components.
Official services are better alternatives when the question is narrow. Police can answer whether a matching identifier is currently shown as reported stolen, PPSR can search registered security interests, and NZTA provides register, expiry and registered-person services.
MotorWeb as a CarJam alternative
MotorWeb says its VIR performs more than 70 checks where applicable, including money owing, reported theft, odometer inconsistencies, flood-damaged import flags, RUC and available safety information. It is owned and operated by Trade Me and serves private buyers as well as motor-industry users.
MotorWeb’s VIR is a snapshot, not an inspection. Its own help page notes important gaps such as some overseas history, accidents and repairs, incomplete odometer information and theft that has not been reported. Free official alternatives for plate and stolen checks
New Zealand Police provides a free stolen-vehicle search using a registration number or alternative VIN, engine or chassis identifier. Police warns that its data is point-in-time and excludes unreported theft, records not yet updated, recovered vehicles not yet reflected and vehicles not registered for NZ use.
NZTA provides online services for vehicle expiry information, registered-person confirmation and buying or selling notifications. These are authoritative for their stated transaction, but they do not combine every history, debt, import and mechanical question into one free report.
Use PPSR to check money owing
The Personal Property Securities Register lets a buyer search for financing statements against a motor vehicle. The Companies Office currently lists the motor-vehicle search fee as NZ$2 plus GST and accepts a registration number, chassis number or VIN.
PPSR explains that the search is an “or” search: a result can match any identifier entered. It recommends the VIN because a registration plate can change while the 17-character VIN normally remains with the vehicle. Save the dated search result and investigate every registered security interest before paying.
Why Motochek is not a simple CarJam replacement
Motochek is NZTA’s registered-user service for frequent or bulk Motor Vehicle Register queries. Account access controls which vehicle and registered-person information can be returned, and personal information remains restricted by law and permissions.
A private buyer checking one car will usually find public NZTA transactions, Police, PPSR or a consumer report easier to use. MotorWeb and Motochek are different services despite their similar names: MotorWeb is the commercial provider, while Motochek belongs to NZTA.
Build a safer check from multiple sources
First match the plate and VIN with the vehicle and documents. Check current licence and WOF or COF information, run a current stolen search, investigate security interests, confirm the seller and review odometer, import, listing and service history where available.
Next inspect and test-drive the vehicle and arrange a professional pre-purchase inspection. Consumer Protection says a valid WOF is only a general safety check and does not prove the car is in good mechanical condition.
Avoid fake vehicle-report websites and seller scams
Be cautious when a buyer or seller insists that you purchase a report from an unfamiliar website, especially when the domain imitates a known provider or payment is demanded urgently. Use provider links reached from trusted official pages and check the exact domain before entering identifiers or card details.
A legitimate-looking PDF or clear report does not override a mismatched VIN, suspicious seller identity, altered plate or unsafe payment request. Pause the transaction and independently verify the vehicle and source.
