RUC is prepaid in complete 1,000 km units. Unused purchased distance remains available on the licence; it is not treated as wasted cost.
Estimate only: Check your vehicle's RUC type, weight and current licence with NZTA. This calculator cannot buy RUC or confirm that a vehicle is legally licensed.
Standard distance licences are prepaid in 1,000 km units. Multiply the number of units by the applicable rate, then add the administration fee for each vehicle licence purchased.
Most diesel and battery-electric vehicles from over 1,000 kg to 3,500 kg use the standard rate of $76 per 1,000 km. Plug-in diesel and non-plug-in diesel hybrids generally use that rate too.
A plug-in petrol hybrid currently pays $38 per 1,000 km because petrol purchases also include fuel excise duty. A petrol hybrid that cannot be plugged in generally does not pay RUC.
The current fee is $12.44 through the NZTA app or online and $13.71 at an agent counter, per licence. Fees are shown separately from distance charges.
If your current licence still covers part of the planned travel, enter those remaining kilometres. The calculator subtracts them before rounding the uncovered distance up to complete 1,000 km units.
Heavy vehicles can depend on RUC weight, axles, tyres, trailers, combinations, permits and additional licences. Use the custom rate only when you already know it, and confirm the full calculation with NZTA.
Distance charges below exclude administration fees, which apply when purchasing a licence.
| Vehicle | 1,000 km | 5,000 km | 10,000 km |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light diesel or electric | $76.00 | $380.00 | $760.00 |
| Plug-in petrol hybrid | $38.00 | $190.00 | $380.00 |
RUC rates and fees are changeable. KiwiTools keeps them in a dated configuration file and links to NZTA so you can confirm the current price and vehicle classification before buying.
The standard rate for most light diesel and electric RUC vehicles up to 3,500 kg is currently $76 per 1,000 km. Plug-in petrol hybrids currently pay $38 per 1,000 km. Administration fees are additional.
One standard distance-licence unit covers 1,000 kilometres. RUC is prepaid, so you must buy another licence before travelling beyond the distance shown on the current licence.
Most light battery-electric vehicles over 1,000 kg and up to 3,500 kg pay the standard light-vehicle RUC rate. Heavy electric vehicles and very light electric vehicles can have exemptions, so check NZTA rules.
Plug-in petrol hybrids pay a reduced RUC rate because they also pay fuel excise duty when buying petrol. Non-plug-in petrol hybrids generally do not pay RUC because their petrol is taxed at source.
Yes. Select NZTA online/app or an agent counter. The model applies the current administration fee to each vehicle licence included in the calculation.
Use the custom-rate input only for a simple budget when you already know the correct rate. Heavy vehicles, trailers, combinations, specialist types and additional licences should be checked with the official NZTA RUC calculator.
Standard distance licences are purchased in complete 1,000 km units. The calculator rounds the uncovered planned distance up to the next full unit and shows the unused prepaid distance.
RUC is only one part of vehicle cost. Add energy or fuel, maintenance, insurance, registration and depreciation when comparing transport options.
