How to check an NZ number plate
Write down the plate exactly as displayed, then use the appropriate official service or established report provider. Begin by confirming that the returned make, model, year and colour match the vehicle in front of you before interpreting any expiry date or status.
Next locate the VIN or chassis number on the vehicle and documents. PPSR recommends the VIN for identifying a motor vehicle because a registration number can change while the 17-character VIN normally remains unique to the vehicle.
Registration and rego are not the same thing
Vehicle registration places a vehicle on the Motor Vehicle Register. Vehicle licensing is the recurring fee and label commonly called “rego”. A car can therefore be registered but have an expired vehicle licence, or its registration can have been cancelled altogether.
Read the exact label attached to a result. Do not describe an expiry date as an ownership check, a WOF result or proof that the vehicle can legally and safely be driven in every circumstance.

Checking WOF, COF and RUC information
A Warrant of Fitness is a periodic check against required safety standards for relevant vehicles; a Certificate of Fitness applies to specified vehicles and uses a different inspection regime. NZTA says a WOF is not a pre-purchase inspection and does not cover important mechanical areas such as engine, clutch, gearbox and differential condition.
Road user charges apply to relevant vehicles and are separate from registration, licensing and inspection. Where RUC information is shown, compare the licence end distance with the physical odometer and investigate any inconsistency before buying.
Run a separate stolen-vehicle check
New Zealand Police provides a public search using a registration number or an alternative VIN, engine or chassis number. Police describes the result as a point-in-time snapshot and warns that it does not include unreported theft, records awaiting update, some recovered vehicles or vehicles not registered for New Zealand use.
The stolen-vehicle data also does not include lost or stolen registration plates. If a possible match appears, do not approach, pursue or attempt to recover the vehicle; follow current Police guidance.
Can a plate check show money owing or ownership?
A general number plate lookup does not automatically search the Personal Property Securities Register. For money owing or registered security interests, use PPSR or a report that explicitly includes an appropriate current search and read which identifiers were covered.
NZTA states that the registered person is responsible for the vehicle but is not necessarily the legal owner. Confirmation of a registered person is useful evidence, not conclusive proof that the seller has legal title or authority to sell.
Free number plate checks versus paid reports
Official free services are useful for narrow questions such as reported stolen status or specific NZTA transactions. CarJam lists free cached basic reports, and MotorWeb provides free basic vehicle facts, but the freshness and fields must be checked.
Paid reports can package debt, odometer, plate, import and other available history. Paying does not guarantee that every accident, repair, overseas event or fault is recorded, so select the report according to the risk and combine it with physical checks.
NZ number plate check limitations
A plate can be mistyped, replaced, cloned or moved. A source can also be cached, delayed or unavailable. Treat a mismatch, missing identifier or old timestamp as a reason to stop and investigate—not as an automatic pass.
Before purchasing a used vehicle, verify the seller, check the plate and VIN, search money owing and stolen status, review service and odometer evidence, inspect the vehicle and arrange an independent pre-purchase assessment.
