How Much Does Cat Insurance Cost in NZ?

Understand cat insurance costs in New Zealand and how age, cover level, annual benefits, excess, co-payment, optional extras and exclusions affect value.

General information only, not personal financial or veterinary advice and not a promise that a claim will be paid. Product terms, premiums and eligibility can change; use the current policy wording and written provider decisions. Calculator figures do not separately calculate GST; check the total shown on each live quote.

Key points

Cat premiums and claim costs at a glance

Cat premiums vary by age, breed, location, cover, annual benefit, excess, co-payment and insurer pricing.

One provider currently advertises cat insurance from about $20 a month, but that is a provider example—not an NZ average or a quote for your cat.

Accident-only cover generally costs less than broader illness cover because it leaves more treatment risk with the owner.

Compare the annual premium with the amount you would still pay after an eligible claim.

Try it now

Start with a cat-specific estimate

A blended pet average can be misleading because cat and dog treatment risk and provider pricing differ. The KiwiTools cat calculator therefore uses cat-only starting assumptions and removes the dog breed-risk field.

Age still matters. Providers can increase premiums as cats get older, and some products change claim contributions or entry eligibility at stated ages.

Treat advertised prices as examples and collect real quotes

Southern Cross currently shows an approximately $8 monthly example for a young domestic shorthair using selected PetCare settings, while Petcover advertises cat cover starting around $20 a month. Those examples use different products and assumptions, so they are not a market range or a forecast for your cat.

Request at least three quotes using the same cat, annual limit, excess, co-payment and cover type. Current options worth checking include Southern Cross, SPCA, Petcover, PD, Cove and AA; use each current policy document to align the benefits.

Illness cover is a major price divider

Accident-only cover leaves illnesses such as eligible cancer, arthritis, infections or urinary conditions outside its scope. Broader policies may cover more of these risks after waiting periods and exclusions.

Compare dental illness, consultations, diagnostics and chronic treatment separately. A broad headline can still contain specific sub-limits.

Calculate an eligible claim from both sides

Take a sample bill, subtract the excess, apply the reimbursement percentage and then cap the insurer amount at the available annual or condition limit. The remainder is the modelled owner share.

For a three-year-old cat with $10,000 accident-and-illness cover and balanced claim sharing, KiwiTools estimates $35.20 a month or $422.40 a year. An eligible $4,000 bill produces a modelled $3,000 insurer share and $1,000 owner share. Repeat this with the excess and co-payment from each real quote.

Keep routine cat care outside the premium comparison

Vaccinations, desexing, flea and worm treatment, food and routine check-ups are commonly excluded from core cover unless a listed optional benefit applies.

Budget those costs separately, then enter the cat’s age, cover and a meaningful vet bill in the cat insurance cost calculator. Replace the estimate with current quotes and compare any routine-care add-on against its extra annual premium and usable benefit.

Frequently asked questions

Is cat insurance cheaper than dog insurance?

It often can be, but the actual quote depends on the cat, cover and insurer. Compare personalised prices rather than applying a general ratio.

How much is kitten insurance?

There is no one kitten price. Younger age may reduce cost, while breed, location, cover, excess and annual limits still affect the quote.

Does indoor-cat insurance cost less?

Providers choose their own pricing questions. Do not assume indoor status creates a discount unless the insurer confirms it.

Can I reduce the cat insurance premium?

Narrower cover, a lower annual benefit or higher owner claim share may reduce price, but these choices also retain more financial risk.
