Key points
Age limits and cover to check for an older cat
Older cats may still obtain cover, but first-entry ages and available products differ from provider to provider.
Current live examples range from accident-only or selected products accepting older cats to broader plans with an upper entry age.
Continuous renewal may preserve eligible cover that a new application would exclude, so switching needs particular care.
Premium, age-related owner contributions and existing-condition exclusions must all be compared.

Current first-entry age examples
These provider examples can change. Always confirm the exact product and entry rule shown on the current quote.
| Check | Current published example | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Southern Cross | PetCare: pet younger than 7; AcciPet: any age, from 8 weeks | AcciPet covers accidental injury rather than the broader PetCare benefits |
| SPCA Pet Insurance | Big Stuff and Everyday: 8 weeks and over; The Works: 8 weeks to 9 years | Each product has different benefits, limits and reimbursement |
| Petcover | A current cat option shows no upper entry limit; several other plans require entry before age 8 | The exact plan and current acceptance criteria control |
Age limits belong to the product
There is no single New Zealand age at which cat insurance becomes unavailable. Southern Cross currently publishes different entry ages for PetCare and AcciPet, while SPCA lists different age positions across Big Stuff, Everyday and The Works.
Petcover’s current cat table also varies by plan, with one option showing no upper entry limit and several others requiring entry before the eighth birthday. Always check the exact option being quoted rather than transferring one limit across a provider’s full range.
Keeping cover can differ from joining
A policy may describe lifetime continuation for eligible treatment when renewal is uninterrupted, subject to each renewal’s terms. This is different from accepting a new older cat today.
If existing cover is useful, do not cancel until a replacement provider has reviewed the cat’s age and medical history and issued written terms.
Existing conditions can dominate the decision
An older cat may have symptoms, investigations or diagnoses recorded before a new policy starts. These and related conditions are commonly excluded under the provider definition.
Ask for exclusions in writing and consider what unrelated future risks remain. A policy can still be useful, but only for the protection it actually retains.
Keep an emergency reserve even with cover
Routine care, excluded illness, the excess, co-payment and amounts above sub-limits remain the owner’s responsibility. Claim reimbursement may also arrive after the vet must be paid.
Run the cat insurance cost calculator at the cat’s current age and set the eligible bill to an amount that would strain your budget. Keep at least the modelled owner share accessible, then add room for exclusions and any age contribution shown in the live policy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I insure a cat over eight in NZ?
Possibly. Entry ages vary by provider and product, and some options may accept older cats. Request a current eligibility decision.
Does cat insurance end when the cat gets old?
Some policies describe ongoing renewal for accepted pets, but premiums, contributions and terms can change. Review each renewal document.
What is an age contribution?
It is an additional percentage of an eligible claim retained by the owner from a specified age, potentially alongside other excesses.
Will an older cat’s current illness be covered?
A condition or symptom existing before new cover is commonly excluded. Ask the insurer to assess the complete veterinary record.
