Cat-only premium assumptions
The calculation uses cat starting amounts rather than a blended pet price. This prevents the generally higher dog assumptions from distorting the cat estimate.

Accident and illness: A broader planning level for eligible accidental injuries and illnesses, with moderate limits and cost sharing.
Planning estimate only: This is not an insurance quote, suitability recommendation or eligibility decision. Replace the modelled result with comparable current quotes for your cat.
The calculation uses cat starting amounts rather than a blended pet price. This prevents the generally higher dog assumptions from distorting the cat estimate.
Accident-only cover is modelled separately from broader accident-and-illness options, helping you compare the cost of a narrower policy with broader protection.
The premium factor rises as a cat gets older. Some providers may also restrict new cover or upgrades by entry age, so an older-cat result needs an eligibility check.
The example combines excess, co-payment and annual benefit limit. This shows why the lowest monthly premium does not automatically mean the lowest cost after an eligible claim.
Use the same cat age, cover level, annual benefit and cost-sharing when requesting quotes. Then compare illness definitions, dental treatment, consultations, exclusions and waiting periods separately.
Accident-only policies normally exclude illness treatment. Check exactly when illness cover starts and how symptoms present before the policy are handled.
Dental illness, injury and routine cleaning may be treated differently. Look for exclusions, waiting periods and a lower dental benefit limit.
Check whether consultation fees, imaging and diagnostic tests are included, excluded or restricted by a sub-limit.
Compare the maximum joining age, renewal terms and whether cover can be upgraded later. Existing renewal rules may differ from a new application.
The cat model starts at $11 a month for accident-only cover, $32 for accident-and-illness cover or $55 for higher cover for a cat under two. It applies the selected age, annual-limit and cost-sharing factors. No dog breed-risk adjustment is included. The planning range is 20% below to 25% above the modelled amount.
| Model input | Accident only | Accident and illness | Higher cover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cat under two | $11 | $32 | $55 |
| Displayed uncertainty | 20% below to 25% above the modelled monthly amount | ||
The claim example deducts the selected excess from the eligible cat treatment cost, applies the reimbursement percentage and caps the insurer share at the annual benefit limit. Excluded treatment, earlier claims and specific sub-limits can increase the amount paid by the owner.
All starting amounts and adjustment factors are KiwiTools planning assumptions, not provider averages or advertised prices.

Cat insurance prices vary by age, cover, annual limit, excess, co-payment, health history, location and provider. This calculator produces a transparent planning amount and range, not a current market average.
The model produces a lower estimate for a younger cat because it applies a smaller age factor. A real quote also depends on policy choices and insurer pricing.
Accident-only cover is narrower and generally lower-cost. Accident-and-illness cover can respond to more eligible conditions, but exclusions, waiting periods, annual limits and cost-sharing still apply.
Not necessarily. Policies can distinguish accidental dental injury, dental illness and routine dental care. Check the definition, waiting period and any dental sub-limit in each current policy document.
Routine vaccinations, desexing, flea treatment and check-ups are often outside core accident-and-illness cover or available through an optional benefit. Check whether the additional premium is worthwhile for the listed benefit.
Provider entry ages and upgrade rules differ. The calculator displays a reminder from age nine, but only a provider can confirm whether new cover is available for a particular cat.
No. It does not collect an address, detailed breed information or medical history and cannot apply current insurer underwriting. Confirm the estimate with personalised quotes.
