Decimal Hours Conversion Guide for New Zealand
Convert hours and minutes into decimal hours for a New Zealand timesheet or pay check, with a practical conversion table, formulas and worked examples.
Key points
The decimal-hours rule that prevents most mistakes
Divide minutes by 60, then add the result to the whole hours: 30 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.50 hours.
Seven hours 30 minutes is 7.50 hours, not 7.30. Clock minutes and decimal fractions use different scales.
To convert back, multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.
Calculate and add exact minutes before rounding, then follow the workplace’s stated rounding method.

Calculate work hours and gross pay
Enter start and finish times, subtract unpaid breaks, total the week and add an optional gross-pay estimate.
Minutes to decimal hours conversion table
Use minutes divided by 60. Values with recurring decimals are shown to two places for reference; an employer’s payroll method may keep more precision.

|---|---|---|
| 6 minutes | 0.10 | 7.10 hours |
| 12 minutes | 0.20 | 7.20 hours |
| 15 minutes | 0.25 | 7.25 hours |
| 20 minutes | 0.33 | 7.33 hours |
| 30 minutes | 0.50 | 7.50 hours |
| 40 minutes | 0.67 | 7.67 hours |
| 45 minutes | 0.75 | 7.75 hours |
| 54 minutes | 0.90 | 7.90 hours |
Convert minutes by dividing by 60
An hour contains 60 minutes, so the decimal share of an hour is minutes divided by 60. For 7 hours 45 minutes, calculate 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, then add the 7 whole hours. The result is 7.75 decimal hours.
This method works for any minute value. Eight hours 20 minutes becomes 8 + 20 ÷ 60 = 8.333… hours. Displaying 8.33 may be convenient, but the unrounded value is more accurate for later totals.
Why 7 hours 30 minutes is not 7.30 hours
The digits after a decimal point are tenths and hundredths of an hour, not clock minutes. A decimal of 0.30 hours means 30 hundredths of an hour. Multiply 0.30 by 60 and it becomes 18 minutes.
Half an hour is 30 out of 60 minutes, so its decimal value is 0.50. Writing 7.30 when the shift was 7 hours 30 minutes understates the time by 12 minutes.

Convert decimal hours back into hours and minutes
Keep the whole-number part as hours and multiply only the decimal part by 60. For 8.4 hours, the whole part is 8 and 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes, giving 8 hours 24 minutes.
For 6.75 hours, 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so the result is 6 hours 45 minutes. Do not read “.75” as 75 minutes.
Total the week before rounding
Rounding every shift separately can create a different weekly answer from adding exact minutes. Four shifts of 7 hours 20 minutes contain 1,760 minutes, or 29 hours 20 minutes. Dividing that total by 60 gives 29.333… decimal hours.
For a personal check, retain the exact minutes and show decimals as a display format. For an official timesheet or payroll process, use the employer’s documented method and compare any rounding with the actual time record.
Use decimal hours for multiplication, not as a replacement record
Decimal hours make pay arithmetic straightforward: 7.75 hours at $30 an hour equals $232.50 gross. The decimal is a useful calculation format, but the underlying start, finish and break details explain how the number was reached.
Keep or compare the daily record when checking pay. A total of 38.50 hours cannot show whether an overnight shift was entered correctly or an unpaid break was deducted twice.
