Key points

Turn fewer leave days into longer breaks

Start with national public holidays and the regional anniversary day applying to the employee.

Look for public holidays beside weekends, then use annual leave only on otherwise-working days between them.

Treat every example as planning: leave still requires approval and work patterns affect entitlement.

Turn four leave days into a ten-day break

This 2026 Easter example assumes a Monday-to-Friday work pattern and no regional holiday during the period.

4–5 AprilWeekendNo leave
Monday 6 AprilEaster MondayPublic holiday
7–10 AprilTuesday to Friday4 annual-leave days
11–12 AprilWeekendNo leave

Build around holidays that already create a long weekend

Easter 2026 gives Good Friday on 3 April and Easter Monday on 6 April. Taking Tuesday 7 through Friday 10 April creates ten consecutive days away—from Friday 3 to Sunday 12—for four annual-leave days.

That is the cleanest kind of leave hack: no dubious entitlement, just placing ordinary leave between public holidays and weekends.

Regional anniversary day is the overlooked extra

Auckland, Wellington, Otago and other areas observe different anniversary days. The applicable day follows the employee’s work location and local observance, not simply the region printed in a home address.

Add the correct anniversary day before comparing plans. Guessing the region can produce a beautiful itinerary built on a workday.

Ask early and leave recovery space

An employer can decline a particular request for genuine business reasons even when the employee has an entitlement to annual holidays. Popular bridge days attract many requests, so submit a clear block early.

The longest possible break is not always the best one. Keeping a few days for illness in the family, a winter reset or an unexpected event can be more valuable than spending the entire balance at Christmas.
