The old provincial map still shapes the day off
Anniversary observance follows former provinces and local custom, not a neat overlay of today’s councils. Canterbury alone has different conventions for northern/central Canterbury and South Canterbury.
Employment New Zealand publishes a useful national list but advises checking the local council for the most reliable date. That warning belongs in any planner that claims regional precision.
Some dates deliberately avoid the actual anniversary
Taranaki moves to the second Monday in March to avoid Easter. Hawke’s Bay uses the Friday before Labour Day. Southland normally observes Easter Tuesday.
Those are not errors to “correct” back to the nearest Monday. They are the local observance people actually need for work and leave planning.

Work location can matter more than home
An employee living in one region and working in another should not assume the home anniversary applies. Employment agreement, workplace location and established custom can determine the relevant day.
For remote work or unclear Otago practice, ask the employer before booking non-refundable travel. A planner can identify likely dates; it cannot settle a disputed employment fact.
