Rollover data is conditional inventory
Unused allowance may carry forward only while an eligible plan renews correctly. Late payment, moving to a non-qualifying plan or reaching an age/cap limit can remove it.
Read the transition rule before changing plans. Discovering after the switch that 40 GB vanished is avoidable.
A growing balance can prove the plan is too large
Someone adding 8 GB and using 3 GB each month accumulates data faster than it can help. The large rollover number feels valuable, but it may be evidence that a cheaper tier would cover ordinary use.
Keep enough for genuinely lumpy months—travel, tethering or an outage—then compare the saving from downsizing with the value of that buffer.

Bonus data may follow different rules
Promotional, DataUp or gifted allowances may expire separately and may not themselves roll over. Account apps often consume categories in a provider-defined order.
When comparing plans, count only data likely to remain available when needed. A headline total made mostly of short-lived bonus data is not equivalent to a permanent base allowance.
