How Much Does Pet Insurance Cost in NZ?

Understand what pet insurance can cost in New Zealand, which pet and policy choices change the premium, and how to compare monthly quotes with claim costs.

General information only, not personal financial or veterinary advice and not a promise that a claim will be paid. Product terms, premiums and eligibility can change; use the current policy wording and written provider decisions. Calculator figures do not separately calculate GST; check the total shown on each live quote.

Key points

What changes the premium and your claim cost

There is no honest NZ-wide average: the pet, age, breed, postcode, cover, annual limit, excess, co-payment and provider can all change the price.

Get at least three quotes using exactly the same pet and cover settings; otherwise the cheapest monthly figure may simply provide less cover.

Compare the annual premium with what you would still pay on a $2,000 and $10,000 eligible vet bill.

Keep a separate cash buffer for the excess, co-payment, routine care, excluded treatment and any period while a claim is being assessed.

There is no one average pet insurance price

A useful answer starts with the actual animal. Cats and dogs should not be priced as though they are interchangeable, and two dogs can receive different quotes because breed, age and expected treatment risk differ. Location, health history, discounts and current underwriting can add another layer.

Published “from” prices describe one selected example. They do not tell you what an older pet, a different breed or broader cover will cost. Treat them as evidence that entry-level options exist, not as the price your household should budget.

Cover choices move the premium and the claim result

Accident-only cover generally starts below accident-and-illness cover because fewer events can qualify. A higher annual benefit, broader condition limits and optional extras can increase the premium. The names used by providers are less important than the benefits and exclusions written into the policy.

Here is a worked KiwiTools example. For a three-year-old cat with accident-and-illness cover, a $10,000 annual benefit and balanced claim sharing, the calculator estimates $35.20 a month or $422.40 a year. On an eligible $4,000 bill with its $250 excess and 20% co-payment, the modelled insurer share is $3,000 and the owner share is $1,000. This is a planning scenario, not a quote or promise of cover.

Compare annual cost rather than one instalment

Convert every quote to an annual premium and check whether paying monthly adds an instalment fee. Then record the excess, co-payment, annual benefit and important sub-limits beside that figure.

A policy that costs $15 less each month saves $180 a year. That saving may disappear after one claim if the cheaper option has a substantially larger excess or owner percentage. This does not make the dearer policy automatically better; it makes the trade-off visible.

Budget for costs insurance does not remove

Pet insurance commonly excludes routine and preventative care unless a specific optional benefit applies. Vaccinations, desexing, flea treatment, ordinary food and routine check-ups should remain in the household pet budget.

You may also need to pay the vet first and claim reimbursement later. Keep enough accessible cash or credit for the payment process described by the insurer, even when the expected treatment is covered.

Run one fair quote comparison

Write down the species, exact breed or crossbreed, date of birth, sex, desexing status, postcode and complete health history once. Then request at least three quotes with the same cover type, annual benefit, excess and co-payment. The provider table above gives a practical starting list without ranking the companies.

For every quote, save the price, policy wording and certificate. Record waiting periods, major sub-limits, dental and consultation treatment, entry-age rules, renewal position and whether the vet must be paid before reimbursement. Start with the pet insurance cost calculator to test the numbers, then replace its estimate with these current quotes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average pet insurance cost in NZ?

A single average can be misleading because cat and dog premiums and policy settings differ. Compare personalised quotes with the same benefits and owner cost-sharing.

Is pet insurance cheaper for younger pets?

It often is, because age is commonly one of the pricing factors. Starting earlier may also reduce the number of conditions that already exist before cover begins.

Does a higher excess reduce the premium?

It commonly can, but product designs differ. Check the premium saving against the extra amount you would pay on an eligible claim.

Is the KiwiTools result an insurer quote?

No. It is a planning model with visible assumptions. Only an insurer can issue a personalised price and confirm eligibility.
