What Does Pet Insurance Cover in NZ?
Learn what New Zealand pet insurance may cover, including accidents, illnesses, diagnostics and treatment, plus common exclusions, limits and waiting periods.

Key points
What can be covered—and where cover stops
Accident-only cover focuses on eligible accidental injury; accident-and-illness cover can add eligible disease and chronic conditions.
A covered condition does not make every cost payable: the annual limit, sub-limits, excess, co-payment and remaining benefit still matter.
Pre-existing conditions, routine or preventative care, breeding and treatment during waiting periods are common areas to check.
The current policy document and certificate control the claim—not a marketing headline or comparison table.

Typical cover categories to check
This table is a reading guide, not a statement that every NZ policy treats an item the same way.
| Check | May be covered when eligible | Common reason payment is limited or excluded |
|---|---|---|
| Accidental injury | Vet examination, diagnostics, surgery and prescribed treatment | Waiting period, excluded activity, excess or annual limit |
| Illness | Diagnostics, medication, surgery and continuing treatment | Pre-existing symptoms, illness waiting period or condition sub-limit |
| Dental | Accidental dental injury or specified dental illness | Routine cleaning, dental waiting period or separate dental cap |
| Routine care | Only when a listed optional benefit applies | Vaccinations, desexing and parasite control commonly sit outside core cover |
Accident-only and illness cover answer different risks
Accident-only cover is designed for eligible unexpected injuries. Accident-and-illness cover can add conditions such as cancer, arthritis, allergies or infections when the policy definition is met and the condition is not pre-existing.
The word comprehensive does not mean unlimited. Find the annual benefit, treatment categories, exclusions and owner share. Two policies with similar names can respond differently.
Eligible veterinary treatment can include several steps
A claim may involve consultation, diagnostic tests, imaging, prescribed medication, surgery, hospitalisation and specialist care. Check whether each step falls inside the main veterinary benefit or a separate cap.
Alternative treatment, behavioural therapy, overseas treatment, emergency boarding and third-party liability may appear only on selected plans. Treat these as separate benefits with their own definitions.

Limits decide how much covered treatment is paid
The annual benefit is the maximum available under the stated terms during a policy year. A lower sub-limit can apply to one condition or service even when the overall annual amount has plenty remaining.
Suppose the pet calculator’s three-year-old cat has an eligible $4,000 treatment bill, a $250 excess and 20% co-payment. The model pays $3,000 and leaves $1,000 with the owner. A real policy could pay less if, for example, the treatment has a $2,000 sub-limit, which is why the overall $10,000 annual benefit is not enough on its own.
Common exclusions need an active check
Pre-existing conditions and clinical signs before cover or during a waiting period are commonly excluded. Routine and preventative care, elective procedures, breeding, pregnancy and non-prescribed products may also sit outside core cover.
Do not assume a symptom is covered because the final diagnosis came later. Policy definitions can consider earlier signs, related conditions and veterinary history. Disclose information accurately and ask for unclear exclusions in writing.
Use a one-page policy comparison
For each quote, record accident cover, illness cover, annual benefit, major sub-limits, excess, co-payment, waiting periods, pre-existing-condition wording, entry age and renewal position.
Enter the same annual limit, excess style and eligible vet bill in the pet insurance cost calculator, then use its owner-share result as a consistent test for every policy. Replace the estimate with each live quote and check the full wording for any feature that matters to your pet.
Frequently asked questions
Does pet insurance cover vet consultations?
Some policies include eligible consultation fees while others restrict them or apply a sub-limit. Check the veterinary-fee benefit and exclusions.
Does pet insurance cover medication?
Prescribed medication for an eligible condition may be covered, subject to policy limits. Routine supplements and treatment for excluded conditions may not be.
Are vaccinations covered?
Vaccinations are commonly routine care and outside core accident-and-illness cover unless a specified optional benefit applies.
Does pet insurance cover chronic conditions for life?
Some renewable policies continue eligible treatment across years while cover remains uninterrupted, but annual limits reset and renewal terms can change. Read the relevant policy wording.
