Located on the secluded Te Wharau (Malua Bay), this campground has flat, undulating grass terraces.
Te Wharau Campground Located on the secluded Te Wharau (Malua Bay), this campground sits on flat, grassy terraces shaded by two large poplars known as “Bailey’s Hammock.” Originally developed for sea kayakers paddling the Te Ara Moana trail, it remains a remote and peaceful spot. Bookings are essential and can be made up to six months in advance. Facilities include one compost toilet and a water tap on the hill near the toilet. Boil all water for at least three minutes before drinking. Fires are prohibited at all times. Use the concrete pad provided when cooking with a gas cooker. There are no bins or rubbish facilities, so all rubbish and recycling must be taken out with you. Dogs, pets, and other animals are not permitted at any time. Getting there The campground is located on the south coast of the park below the paddocks. There is no vehicle access to this campground. Main park gates are open 6am–9pm during daylight savings, and 6am–7pm at other times. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
