This is a basic nine-bunk hut in the Mid & South Canterbury area.
The hut sits in a glacial basin beneath the Arrowsmith Ranges at around 1275 m. It is reached via a 16 km tramp from the car park that takes 5 to 6 hours of medium difficulty. The track is only sporadically marked and requires some route-finding skills. Stay on the true right of the river. Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets cannot be used at this hut. Nightly fees are free for Canterbury Mountaineering Club members and $10 for non-members. Fees can be paid online. Please sign the intentions book at the car park so local runholders can monitor access through their property. Take care to avoid fire. Candles are not permitted as they put huts at risk. All huts are equipped with fire extinguishers and fire blankets for smothering flames. Carry out all your rubbish and remember to fill in the hut book. Cameron Hut is subject to a low avalanche risk. This is most likely during heavy snowfall years, particularly when snow lies around the hut during major storms or in the 24 hours afterwards.
Availability, fees, facilities, water and access can change. Confirm the latest hut information and alerts, carry suitable equipment, and be prepared for the hut to be full.
