The Centre of New Zealand on Botanical Hill is one of Nelson’s most popular short walks, offering great views and a touch of local history. The name comes from its use as a central survey point in the 1800s by Chief Surveyor John Spence Browning, who used the hill as the origin for New Zealand’s first geodetic survey. The walk starts at the Botanical Reserve, reached by a footbridge at the end of Hardy Street. From here, a well-formed but steep track climbs through native vegetation to the summit. Allow 20-60 minutes return, depending on fitness. The main track has no stairs and is suitable for sturdy buggies. It offers several resting spots and interpretive panels that tell the story of the site and showcase views of Nelson over the last century. At the summit, enjoy panoramic views over Nelson Tasman, the Maitai Valley, and the Waimea Inlet. Descend via one of the alternative tracks on Botanical Hill, or extend your walk along the hillside on the Sir Stanley Whitehead Walkway. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
