Paekakariki: The wooden bridge was damaged by Cyclone Gita and has been removed. Alternative vehicle access is upstream on Wellington Road.Extra care must be taken on the Loop Road due to pedestrian traffic. Please be aware of debris in the area. Whareroa: The Coastal track from Whareroa beach to the Raumati esplanade entrance is CLOSED due to erosion. Crews will be busy over the next few months cleaning up and we ask the public to keep out of areas that have been closed and report any additional damage to the Ranger.

Dogs are not permitted on or near farmland. Pack in and pack out. Take your rubbish home and recycle where possible. No rubbish bins are provided. There are numerous easy walks amongst the coastal dunes. Please keep to formed tracks. The beach is excellent for swimming. Swim between the Paekakariki Surf Club flags in summer. Light no fires. You are welcome to use a portable gas barbecue. Keep motor vehicles on formed roads and car parks. Keep off the grassed areas and pedestrian trails. Do not remove, disturb or damage native plants or animals. Camping is allowed only in the Paekakariki Holiday Park, near the park's southern entrance. To book, please phone 04 292 8292.
To reach the coastal dunes, picnic areas, and motor camp at Paekakariki, turn off SH1 into the township and turn right into Wellington Road. The park entrance is at the end of Wellington Road. The MacKays Crossing entrance off SH1 gives access to Whareroa Beach and surrounding dunes, picnic areas, walking, cycling and horseriding trails, the Tramway Museum, WWII Marines displays, several wetlands and the kahikatea forest remnant. To walk, run or cycle amongst the coastal dunes near Raumati South, turn off SH1 at Poplar Ave and follow the road to its end at the Esplanade. Turn left and drive for about 1km to reach the park entrance. It is a 1.5 km walk or cycle from the Paekakariki railway station to the southern park entrance at the end of Wellington Road. Or take a No 250 bus from Paraparaumu railway station to Jeep Rd, Raumati South.
