Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Follow the Curtis Falls Track from the car park at Ngāti Ruanui Stratford Mountain House, turning right down the steps into the Te Popo Stream valley. After crossing the stream, a series of steps and ladders will lead you steeply uphill before the track drops sharply into the gorge of the Manganui River. Once you reach the riverbed, there is no defined track—simply continue walking upstream until you arrive at the lower cascade. Ensure you have looked behind you so you know where to exit the river on your return. To the left of the lower cascade, you’ll find a way to climb up. A short distance further upstream brings you to the base of the main Curtis Falls.
Expect overgrown and steep and slippery terrain in places. Track erosion around streams may also be present This track is not recommended after heavy rain. This track is not suitable for younger children.
In Stratford, turn off SH3 into Pembroke Road and follow this up the mountain for 14.5 km to Ngāti Ruanui Stratford Mountain House. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
