Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
From Thompson’s Track car park, the walking track descends an old bulldozed path, crossing Waitekohe Stream, which is easily crossed in normal flow, before joining the Old Eliza Mine Pack Track. It then climbs to an old pack track once used to transport supplies to the mine. Following the gully above the stream, the track reaches the Mt Eliza junction after about an hour. From here, a steep ridge leads to the Eliza Mine area. A small clearing marks the site of the former miner’s camp and ore testing plant. The track then sidles around Mt Eliza’s steep slopes. The main mine entrance is to the left, while the right-hand track leads to a short prospecting drive before continuing 40 minutes up to the Mt Eliza summit. Return to the pack track junction and follow it up the valley, crossing Waitekohe Stream before zigzagging up to meet Thompson’s Track. Follow this rough road back to the car park, watching for 4WD vehicles and mountain bikes.
If you are travelling to Motutapere Hut , continue on the Eliza Pack Track past the summit to the junction with the North South Track, and take the right hand track; the hut is a 30-minute walk north from this junction. This cozy three-bunk hut is managed by the Thames Valley Deerstalkers Association, with space for tents nearby. A rocky platform just above the hut offers great views over Bay of Plenty farmland and Tauranga Harbour—an ideal spot to watch the sunrise.
Eliza Mine Loop Track is on Thompsons Track off SH2 between Tauranga and Katikati. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
