Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
From the track entrance, walk along the well formed track for about 60 minutes until you arrive at the junction to the signposted caves. From that point onwards, the track becomes quite rough. Expect scrambling through roots, muddy and steep sections, wet rocks and fallen trees. A reasonable level of fitness is required for this section. It takes approximately 60-90 mins to complete the caves loop depending on how much time is spent exploring the 3 caves. After completing the caves loop, the track rejoins the main track to find the way out.
Bring with you: Warm clothing - It’s quite a few degrees colder inside the caves, therefore warm clothing is recommended Flashlight for exploring the caves - a headlight is best Sturdy footwear is essential - water runs through the caves and rocks can be sharp and slippery Helmet - banging your head on the roof of the cave is painful! Also: Don’t forget to sign the visitor’s book on your way in and out. Don't go into the caves following heavy rain as they flood.
Travelling north on SH67, after arriving at Karamea turn off at Oparara Road. Continue on this road until the turn off into Fenian Road. You’ll find the track carpark at the end of this short gravel road. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
