Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Time required: 2 hours Fern Gully Track starts with a short stroll through native tree ferns and grassland. It heads into a small gully, then climbs through mature beech and birch forest. To continue a leisurely loop, with views over Wainuiomata turn right along Rata Ridge and continue for 40 mins to the summit of Mt Lowry. You’ll then get views Complete the loop by returning 10 minutes back down Rata Ridge and then turning left onto Lees Grove Track.
Fern Gully Track starts on Gardiner Grove, Wainuiomata (between house numbers 19a and 19b). Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there. There are regular bus services to Wainuiomata and the surrounding areas.
