Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
The Wainuiomata Recreation Area sits at the bottom of one of the largest and most untouched lowland forests in the lower North Island. The Gums loop track tucked into the lower valley leads you on a leisurely amble through the park. Listen out for native birds as you walk amongst native bush, gum trees and the occasional pine. Crossing over the Wainuiomata river via a swing bridge the track then reaches the Mackay cottage site, where there are options to extend your walk via more challenging loops. It’s worth noting the swing bridge is only recommended for smaller prams. This track can be done in either direction from the main carpark.
Amenities Picnic tables short walk from track Toilets off track at lower dam area Be aware Kiwi are present in the area and occasionally end up near the tracks, dogs should be on lead at all times within the park The trail is currently suitable for pram access, but not wheelchairs
Go to the Wainuiomata Recreation Area, located at 10 Whitcher Grove (off Moores Valley Road), travel until you get to the main carpark with the information kiosk and follow signage to the Lower dam. Closest Bus stop is Wainuiomata South – 8921, then cross the field of Hine road reserve to the park entry. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
