Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Access is from either Russell Road or Kauika Road, with steep inclines at both ends. The track passes through impressive stands of mature native trees, nikau groves, and a Māori pā site, with views across the city and harbour. The track can be slippery after rain, but was upgraded in 2022 with new surfacing, boxed steps, and the removal of unstable trees. If starting at Russell Road you can return the same way, or walk through to Kauika Road and continue down Wilson, Fifth, and Selwyn Avenues to link back via the Selwyn Avenue Link. This signposted track starts from the Quarry Arts Centre at the end of Selwyn Avenue, where there is a grass car park. It is surfaced, with numerous steps and boardwalks. After about 300 metres, an offshoot track leads to the pā site. The main track climbs to meet the Frank Holman Memorial Track on the ridge. Taking the pā site detour adds around 10 minutes to the walk. No dogs are allowed in the reserve, as it is home to North Island brown kiwi.
