Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Enjoy the sights and sounds of the Tawharanui Open Sanctuary as you leave Anchor Bay and loop around the headland following the North and South Coast Trails. You can start at either the Lagoon car park or at the Sanctuary Hut at Anchor Bay. Follow the white markers along the track, which winds up either at the northern or southern coasts (depending on where you begin). Mid-way around the track take the optional lookout and loop tracks to Tokatū Point at the end of the peninsula (approx 2.4km depending on the route taken).
Visiting areas with healthy kauri trees Please make sure you follow these steps: Clean your footwear, tyres and equipment before and after visiting our kauri forests. If you are walking your dog, you should also make sure you clean their paws. Use cleaning stations every time you pass one while you are walking in a park. Stay on the tracks and keep off kauri roots. Stay away from closed tracks. Don't remove soil from, or bring soil into, areas with kauri trees.
The walks starts from the northern end of Takatu Road, on the Tāwharanui Peninsula. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
